Cheese Technical Manager

Our client is a large dairy company, annually processing over 2 billion litres of milk into a uniquely broad range of ingredients for export to more than 60 countries. They supply leading multinational food and nutrition companies – across a range of sectors from branded cheese and butter through to infant formula, sports, affordable and clinical nutrition for both developed and developing markets.

An opportunity has arisen within the R&D Department for Technical Manager, Cheese Products. Reporting to R&D Senior Management, this role will have a strong day to day relationship with the Product Manager for all customer commercial and technical matters, and will work within the R&D Department and with relevant members of the Commercial Team. The role will provide technical support, manage cheese NPD, and be responsible for the development of technical capability in the area of cheese ingredient solutions for supply into retail, foodservice and manufacturing sectors.

Role/ Responsibilities:
• To manage cheese new product development programme – particularly in the areas of functional variants, ingredient optimisation and applications.
• To work with the R&D, Process Technology, Product Management and Commercial teams to identify, develop and validate cheese product and cheese solution opportunities.
• To work with internal cross functional teams as part of supplier relationship management to key customers, and to act as customers champion across technical platforms & internal processes.
• Provide technical input to cheese product strategy development.
• To interface with customers and visit/understand markets on a technical level to identify key functional and nutritional product requirements, and to assess and manage development of recipes and specifications.
• To work closely with operations teams at two large scale production facilities to successfully commercialise new products to market.
• To develop and manage a team of technologists to underpin and enhance cheese offering and technical understanding.
• To direct and control a research and development programme in combination with key third party institutions to further research base and understanding of cheese as a functional & nutritional ingredient.
• To problem solve technical production, product application/quality, or consistency issues.

• Science based qualification (preferably to post-graduate level ideally in area of cheese or dairy products).
• Minimum of 10 years relevant technical and/or operational experience in a value-added dairy or related human nutrition industry.
• Sound dairy chemistry understanding is required and extensive regulatory experience would be an advantage.
• Excellent communication skills particularly in technical arena for interaction at all levels

o Good concise report writing; good numerical skills
o Ability to deal with ambiguity
o Strong commercial awareness
o Pro-active, self-driven, and results-oriented; track record of delivery in project and programme management a must.
o Willingness to travel to markets in the EMEA region
