Bio-marine Ingredients Ireland (BII) wish to appoint a Product Development Scientist for our new marine ingredients business to be based in Lough Egish, Co. Monaghan. More details on the company can be found at www.biomarine.ie. The Product Development Scientist role will support the establishment of a new business venture seeking to provide marine ingredients for the human nutrition and healthcare markets, using under-utilised species of fish, by assisting in the development of existing processes, new processes and new products.

Key responsibilities:
  • Working with management, customers and key external stakeholders including the Scientific Advisory Board, initiate a comprehensive scientific programme that will ultimately support BII in accessing human nutrition and functional ingredient markets with a range of marine ingredients.
  • Assist in concept generation, development and in the transfer of innovative marine products and processes to production scale.
  • Work with BII colleagues to ensure any new products are developed cost effectively and reproducibly to give BII a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Organise and plan, in detail, projects within budget and timescale, to provide products and processes contributing to company profitability.
  • Maintain a high degree of personal knowledge with respect to process and product technology in order to identify new opportunities.
  • Work with funding institutions and research partners to write research grants proposals/applications for funding.

Key candidate attributes:

  • Minimum degree (BSc, MSc, MEng) in Food Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering or closely related discipline. Ideally with a PhD and several years relevant post-doctoral research experience in an academic and/or industrial environment.
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge associated with applied enzymology for the development of enzyme catalysed processes, taking these processes from laboratory to industrial scale.
  • The ability to research and develop new enzymes and processes for the production of novel marine-based products around the proposed product line.
  • Excellent laboratory and analytical skills. These should include experience or knowledge in the quantitative and structural analysis of proteins and peptides by HPLC using different detectors, HPLC method development, tandem mass spectrometry techniques, chemical derivatisation and GC/MS or MS/MS.
  • Enzyme application experience or ability particularly in the areas of human and animal nutrition.
  • Ideally 3 years experience in the food industry or relevant biotechnology sector.
  • Ability to present to customers and to understand, and to deliver on their technical requirements
  • Good commercial awareness and ideally knowledge/experience with food proteins and peptides.
  • Ability to be creative, innovative and to manage a number of projects simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge and experience in data analysis, statistics and experimental design along with the appropriate computing skills.
  • Ability to communicate internally and externally with customers and suppliers both verbally and written.
  • Energy and drive - a hands on operator who can take ownership, build and manage a small team.
  • Ability to work within a team environment and under own initiative whilst adhering to tight timescales
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel
