Applications are invited for a research position in photonic communication systems research.
The successful applicant will join the Photonic Systems Group, at the Tyndall National Institute (http://www.tyndall.ie/research/photonics-systems-group/index.html), and will carry out research on the development and implementation of the Physical Layer and MAC Layer for Long Reach Passive Optical Networks (LR-PONs). The position, which is available initially for a period of two years, is funded by Science Foundation Ireland under the Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research (CTVR) programme. The overall objective is to implement a fully working Physical Layer (including the optics) and a MAC layer including functionality such as forward error correction (FEC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC). Particular emphasis is placed on the burst-mode operation of the upstream channel of the PON. It is intended to implement the Physical Layer optics, control and interface functionality on PCBs, and the MAC Layer and Physical Layer control functionality in FPGA technology. An additional research topic will be the assignment and control of wavelength tuneable devices to enable full operational wavelength flexibility over the LR-PON network under control of the MAC Layer.
The candidate will hold, or being expecting to receive, a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or a related subject and will ideally have interest, knowledge and experience (including published research papers) in the following areas:
- Experience in Xilinx FPGA design
- Experience in circuit board development
- Working knowledge of MAC protocols
- Working knowledge of PON protocols and their implementation.
