Chief Medical Scientist (Microbiology)

Our client is a global testing laboratory, based in South Dublin. They are currently seeking a Chief Medical Scientist (Microbiology) who is CORU registered with at least 2 years’ experience as a Senior Medical Scientist specifically in the area of Microbiology with approx. 7+ years’ experience in Micro labs. Super opportunity to join an established lab in a senior position with 6 direct reports.

This is a very high-level role in the Microbiology department and the organisation offers a very attractive and competitive compensation and benefits packages to all their employees. CORU registration is essential for this post.

Role/Responsibilities:

  • To assist our client in maintaining a high standard in medical testing.
  • Provide support to clients and colleagues to ensure a first-class service.
  • To maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills as required.
  • Work with colleagues to contribute towards the continuous improvement of the department.
  • Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the mission and values of our client.
  • Assist in the organisation of workload, prioritising tasks to ensure the effective running of the department.
  • Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient and Company information.
Specific Tasks:
  • Use of Laboratory Information Management Systems in place in the laboratory.
  • Be aware and compliant with all documentation related to your department.
  • Reporting and contributing to monitoring, recording and investigations for non-conformances and incident reports.
  • Assist in the completion of the department’s daily tasks to a high standard to ensure patient results are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the completion and timely reporting of EQA.
  • Authorise results, ensuring result accuracy at all times.
  • Evaluate results and communicate with your Laboratory Services Manager, Consultant Microbiologist and/or requesting clinician any relevant information regarding patient safety.
  • Assist with the validations and verifications of new or amended methods/kits/equipment when required.
  • Contribute to monitoring, recording and investigations for audits.
  • Report or contribute to the monitoring and recording of complaints and investigations of clinical complaints, taking corrective action as appropriate.
  • Work towards achieving the short and long-term departmental goals & quality objectives.
  • Participate in setting-up and implementing the Department’s Laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of our client.
  • Help to identify weaknesses in the Department/Laboratory and promote through consultation, ways of improvement.
  • Assist in the selection of new equipment together with your Laboratory Services Manager.
  • Routine duties and sample analysis as required to ensure patient results are delivered in a timely manner
  • As required, collaborate in approved research/development work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the senior management team.
  • Participate in the management of reagent and consumable stock levels.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of instrumentation including troubleshooting and organizing preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Advise of any equipment failures or problems encountered in the course of carrying out his/her duties and highlighting any potential need for upgrade of aged or worn equipment.
  • Clean/disinfect working areas daily.
  • Demonstrate Good Laboratory Practice.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Provide direction and supervision to Microbiology Staff
  • Ensure staff recruitment and selection occurs with regards to replacement and new staff
  • Provide Technical support to all staff
  • Ensure work scheduling and assignment of duties
  • Review of staff performance
  • Provide recommendations on all staff increases, promotions etc. when required

Education/ Experience:
  • Bachelor Degree & Master Degree in Biomedical Science
  • Possess at least 7 years full time Clinical experience in Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory as Medical Scientist in Microbiology
  • At least 2 years’ experience as a Senior Medical Scientist
  • Registered with CORU essential
  • Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microbiological sample processing, culture, organism identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing, use of Microbiology automation and use of LIMS in generation of client reports. Thorough knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements and Laboratory accreditation.
  • Ability to identify and implement operational processes to the standard of best practice in order to optimise use of resources.
  • Proven ability to work and deliver services within agreed budgets.
  • Encourages lab personnel towards professional growth and development by sharing information.
