Senior Medical Scientist (Haematology)

Our client offers a wide range of diagnostic pathology tests and patient services from their Dublin-based laboratory to the Irish healthcare sector. They are currently seeking a Senior Medical Scientist to join an established team in the Blood Sciences Laboratory in their South Dublin location. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the successful person shall provide a Haematology, Clinical Chemistry and Serology service to all users. They will liaise with all laboratory support departments and support other Senior Medical Scientists and Laboratory Manager in maintaining an effective department.


  • Perform routine and specialised work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Laboratory Management Team, Consultant Pathologists and Laboratory Manager.
  • Lead and co-ordinate scientific staff and/or support staff within the Laboratory.
  • Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with our clients policy.
  • Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or our clients information.
  • In co-operation with the Consultant Pathologists, Laboratory Manager, and other senior staff, participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods according to our clients policy.
  • Participate as required in the registration, custody and stock level of the laboratory reagents, consumables and other materials held in the Laboratory.
  • Receive and record details concerning mishaps, complaints and defects in reagents, consumables and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members, taking necessary actions and reporting the findings as required / determined by Senior Scientists and/or Laboratory Manager.
  • Ensure that policy relating to the record keeping is followed.
  • Facilitate arrangements, where appropriate, to introduce professional and/or other visitors to the Laboratory.
  • Facilitate arrangements in the Laboratory for educating and training undergraduates and post-graduate students.
  • Create and promote healthy working relationships and stimulate initiative among Laboratory staff.
  • Supervise scientists and medical laboratory assistants working in the Laboratory.
  • Coordinate daily activities as assigned in the Laboratory.
  • Develop and manage rosters when required.
  • Evaluate techniques and equipment when required.
  • Manage IT issues as required.
  • Manage IQC and EQA as required.
  • Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Pathologists, Laboratory Manager, other Senior staff, appropriate compliance with International and National guidelines and standards for the provision of Laboratory Services (as applicable) and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance.
  • Collect, interpret and present data and information on the Laboratory’s activities, staffing and expenditure, as required.
  • Participate in the implementation of a ‘quality management’ programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction.
  • Participate in ISO 15189 as directed by the Laboratory Manager and other designated senior staff.
  • Be responsible for ensuring you participate in laboratory training programmes as required by Laboratory Management e.g. Laboratory techniques training and retraining.
  • Actively participate in and promote continuing education activities consistent with the position.
  • Comply with Health and Safety legislation and responsibilities as outlined in our clients Policies, Protocols and Procedures relevant to your area.
  • Support the delivery of the Quality, Safety and Risk Management Programme, including the appropriate identification and management of risks and incidents throughout the hospital.
  • Report to the Laboratory Manager.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Authorization of patient results.

Educational Requirements
  • Master of Science in field of Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Current registration with Academy of Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Evidence of certification by CORU or application to CORU
Experience Required
  • Possess 4+ years experience in a medical laboratory since qualifying as a Medical Scientist
