Job description

VP of Technical Operations

Life Science Recruitment are currently sourcing a VP of Technical Operations for a start-up medical device company in Galway, to be the strategic partner and advisor to the CEO on all matters related to the technical operations of the business, and be a key member of the senior management team for the Group.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Responsible for directing and executing all technical operations activities of the group of companies.
• In partnership with the CTO define the operating approach to transition new products from R&D to production.
• Define and prioritize selection criteria for new manufacturing partners, oversee (with QA) the process for assessing new partners and be the primary point of contact with key manufacturing partners and manage relationships with these key partners.
• While working closely with QA, Finance and the CEO lead the negotiation of contracts with key manufacturing partners.
• Ensure that high quality product is delivered, supply chain runs smoothly and efficiently, that pricing is competitive, that supplier power is managed, and that the knowhow and intellectual property of the company is protected and that all intellectual property paid for by the company vests in the company.
• Develop and evolve a vision for an outsourced manufacturing operation for the group and exercise good judgment in balancing:
o Outstanding product technical performance.
o High quality and reliable products.
o Dependable supply chain that allows uninterrupted development of the business.
o Robust inventory management strategies.
o Low cost of goods.
o Retention of all know how and IP associated with the product.

Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Materials or Industrial Engineering. Masters or PhD in a related field is highly desirable, or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience.
• At least 20 years of experience in the medical device industry with at least 10 years management and leadership experience.
• A track record of bringing new products through development, commercialization and scaling operations to meet global demand.
• Demonstrated leadership and management experience in working with cross-functional, geographically dispersed teams on complex projects.
• Innovative technical operations leader who blends strategy, planning and analytics to produce outstanding business results.
• Requires excellent written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Ability to effectively present information to top management peers, in public fora, and to a board of directors.
• Prior experience working for a MedTech company whose products and processes are FDA regulated is a requirement.
• A track record of project management execution.
• A self-starter who is able to see and deliver the entire program of work required to realize the business strategy with a minimal amount of direction.
• Highly aware of the entire chain of customers that s/he serves and is focused on meeting all the needs of his/her customers.
• Has a profound understanding of team dynamics and is able to build teams that deliver outstanding results. • Experience in the development and production of medical devices that require complex processes and assembly techniques and a proven ability to deliver results in this setting.
• Holds him/herself and others accountable to meet commitments by following through, acting with a clear sense of ownership, and taking personal responsibility for decisions, actions and failures.
• Able to prioritize and focus on the few critical objectives.
