Mythbusters: Breaking Bad Special

It appears that a lot of people’s dreams have come true in what can only be described a nerdish perfect storm. Two of the best shows on TV have collaborated: The fictional one where the chemistry teacher gets cancer, becomes a drug cook to pay for his treatment; killing a lot of people in the process, and the factual one where these guys blow uop a lot of stuff and then play in back in slow motion. I’m talking about Breaking Bad and Mythbusters.

Both shows have science at their core. Walter White, Breaking Bad’s main protagonist uses chemistry to access and dominate a drug underworld where he crowned king. Science takes centre stage, but is it accurately portrayed? The guys on Mythbusters take commonly known urban legends and then test them to breakin point. I particularly love how their method involves little isolated micro tests but finish up at a point where not only has the myth been taken to its logical conclusion but far beyond that into a realm of extreme explosive insanity. This episode is no different. Two of the show’s most iconic scenes: the bathtub of hydroflouric acid which comes crashing through the ceiling and the use of mercury fulminate as a powerful explosive are put through the paces of the mythbusters colourful take on the scientific method. I won’t ruin it you’ll see what I mean.
