The pharmaceutical industry in Ireland started in 1959 when Leo Laboratories purchased an old tobacco factory in South Dublin. Since then it has expanded into one of our industrial cornerstones, with 8 of the top 10 pharma companies having operations on these shores. In 2008, exports accounted for almost 52% of our total national export, highlighting just how important is has been and will be to Ireland as a whole. As a result, Ireland has steadily produced an increasing number of qualified scientists who are crucial to the current upkeep and expansion of this key export.
