Supply Chain is a term that describes every effort involved in producing and delivering a finished service or product from inception to end user.Supply Chain Management involves the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and procurement, production and all logistics management activities. These activities include managing supply and demand, sourcing and procurement of materials and services, manufacturing and assembly, warehouse and inventory, order management, distribution and delivery to customer.

Basically it involves everything from upstream procurement to downstream logistics and all supply chain activities in-between. Supply Chain Management has the responsibility for linking business functions and processes across organisations helping to create a close knit and high performing business.

Supply Chain activities are important now for many reasons the primary one being that customers are the ultimate drivers of the supply chain in today's global marketplace. It is very important for companies to be competitive and proactive to respond to this and as such companies that learn how to improve their supply chain will become the most successful. Companies are increasingly presented with having to find new and innovative ways to met ever demanding customer requirements.
