Inventory Manager Career Profile

Inventory Manager


An Inventory Manager is responsible for keeping materials, parts, products and stock items supplied and readily available. Inventory Management involves maintaining records and ordering stock at appropriate times, as well as forecasting future stock needs based on orders, seasonality or scheduled production. Inventory Managers also keep track of inventory costs and stock usage rates. These roles can also involve tracking shipping schedules and delivery.

Typical duties and skills for an Inventory Manager include


  • Inventory Control: Responsibility for ensuring that loss of inventory due to theft, fraud, loss, damage or counting errors are kept to a minimum
  • Records of each product's inventory count must be regularly maintained so that no product is ever out of stock and customer fulfilment rates remain high
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of Inventory Management strategies
  • Develop and implement inventory models to identify appropriate safety stock and order levels
  • Drive continuous improvement in areas of remit
  • Hold at least a 3rd Level qualification in an appropriate field
  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience in inventory management
  • Strong influencing skills - ability to influence stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail is key
  • Strong computer and ERP skills
