Biotechnology is a natural industrial progression from the pharmaceutical sector, which has been thriving in Ireland since the arrival of Leo Laboratories in Crumlin in 1959. Since then it has been subject to heavy investment from some of the largest healthcare companies, with the largest biotech campus in the world being completed in west Dublin. There has also been large-scale investment in other companies in Cork and in other areas of the country. As a result, Ireland has steadily produced an increasing number of qualified scientists who are crucial to the current upkeep and expansion of this key export. There are many strata to the industry, which employ people from all backgrounds, not only Science. The 3 main areas that biotech has the greatest effect are : agriculture, healthcare and industry. Agriculture concerns mainly the genetic engineering of plants. Healthcare encompasses all new and existing drug discoveries via microbes and associated life forms. Industry includes biofuels and new applications of same.
