Job Title: Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Client
My client’s Limerick-based facility is a strategic R&D and engineering centre focused on the development of innovative medical and diagnostic technologies. The site brings together engineering, scientific, quality, and operations teams to support the full product lifecycle, from early-stage development through to commercialisation. As part of a global organisation, the facility plays a key role in advancing life sciences and healthcare technologies while collaborating closely with international teams and stakeholders.
Role Summary
Lead the design, development, and verification of complex medical devices (capital equipment and disposables), ensuring innovative, manufacturable, and regulatory-compliant solutions. Provide technical and team leadership across the full product lifecycle, from concept through commercialisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design and development of medical device systems, components, and packaging.
- Translate product requirements into specifications and design solutions.
- Conduct feasibility studies, proof-of-concept testing, and design verification.
- Drive product and process improvements for quality, performance, manufacturability, and cost.
- Lead risk management activities (FMEA, FTA, PHA) and root cause investigations.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
- Manage engineering projects, technical reviews, and stakeholder communications.
- Mentor and lead engineers, including task planning, performance management, and team development.
- Support compliance with medical device quality and regulatory requirements.
Required Experience & Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related Engineering discipline.
- 6–9 years of medical device design experience, including 5+ years leading mechanical design teams.
- Experience developing both capital equipment and disposable medical devices.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), DOE, and statistical analysis.
- Expertise in materials, manufacturing processes, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Proven project leadership, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.
- Strong communication and cross-functional team management abilities.
- Knowledge of medical device regulations and standards (ISO 13485, MDR, FDA CFR 820).
- Familiarity with Stage-Gate/Product Development Lifecycle processes.
